Book Description

This text is used in a mathematical software course at VMI that provides an introduction to Matlab and Mathcad. However, Troy Siemers also intends it to be a course book instead of an all inclusive resource. He encourages his students to take full advantage of the built-in help capabilities of these software packages, additional texts (he keeps a few in a small library that is always available to students) and to use Google - noting that he certainly did when learning the material and still does today.

Siemers emphasizes that this text is much shorter than a traditional text. He has tried to provide the right amount of discussion and examples. The exercise sets have a small number of problems, but Siemers assigns all of them when he teaches the course. He has tried to give problems that come from real-world situations and contemporary data and aren't simply contrived just to fill space. The author notes that some problems reference the electronic course management system at VMI (Angel), but these can be ignored as the data sets are also included in the Appendix.
